Housing
About 150 monks arrive each year at Drepung Gomang college and, of course, they cannot be refused. It is a tough challenge to provide living quarters for them. In many cases 4-6 monks will share a very small room, where they sleep, eat and study. Most houses don't have running water. Monks have to share one common area for drinking water, showers and washing clothes. The crush of the new arrivals overburdens sanitary facilities and the primitive drainage infrastructure, which in turn is a primary cause of disease.
We want to provide sufficient and decent living quarters with
a minimum of hygienic standards and running water.
